Important Definitions

  • FERPA stands for the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act.
  • A “student” is any person who is attending or has attended CUA and for whom CUA maintains a record.
  • An “education record” is any record that is related to the student and maintained by CUA. It may contain both directory information and non-directory information.
  • Directory information” is information contained in an education record of a student that generally would not be considered harmful or an invasion of privacy if disclosed. Some students at CUA instruct the University not to disclose even this basic information.
  • Non-directory information” is personal information that may not be released without a student’s consent.
  • A “School official” is anyone employed by CUA in an administrative, supervisory, academic, research, support staff, or student position. As a student employee (worker), if you have access to student education records in order to perform your job duties you may be considered a “school official.”
