Determining Confidentiality


To determine whether the information you access is confidential, ask yourself:

  1. Does the information have to do with a specific individual? i.e. student, employee, patient, alumni or donor?
  2.  What type of information is it? Student related? Medical related? Financial related?
  3. Can the information be used to identify, locate or contact a specific person?
  4. Is the information available publicly?
  5. Is the information protected by a law or a regulation?


If you are uncertain if the information is confidential, ask your supervisor or contact the university’s Compliance and Privacy Officer
